Just 10 minutes a day is all it takes. We have far too much to do, too little time to do it and often we are not prioritising our health and wellbeing.
When I had my first son people expected me to just get on with it. To get up in the night with him, go to work in the morning, manage the house and somehow be healthy. In addition to this, I had a chronic illness that was not well managed. Every day was about getting by.
For some reason, one particularly exhausted day, I decided that I was done trying to nap. As a mama with insomnia, a baby who woke in the night and chronic fatigue, a nap would have been great. Instead, in my state of “too tired to be awake – too tired to get to sleep” and still unable to nap (driven to literal tears of frustration many days), I tried something new.
I put on a guided meditation called yoga nidra. It was just 18 minutes long. The voice was soothing. My body relaxed. Afterward, I felt somewhat rested.
The Lightbulb Moment
Something profound happened that day. I finally found something to help me rest a little bit. And the seed was planted that I had tremendous power to change my quality of life.
Of course, we know that it is so easy for our self-care to go by the wayside. So, despite having a tool that helped, I wasn’t able to do it regularly. Yet. I spent another few months learning the precious lesson that my son NEEDED me to put my own oxygen mask on first. That by prioritising my self-care (my rest/yoga nidra) I was a better mama.
Fast forward to 2021 and I protect my rest time like a boss. I also make time, in 10 minute increments, for other self-care. Things that make my life, health and experience better.
For the past several years since I gained this precious tool, I have researched, read, practiced and made learning about self-care a third job.
I have shared my journey (the ups and downs) to better wellness despite chronic pain, fatigue and insomnia on the blog www.melissavsfibromyalgia.com. In addition to over 250 blog posts and 100 YouTube videos, I have written two books, a workbook and several courses.
During this time I have created three more baby boys (fourth ETA March 2021), trained to be a yoga teacher (while my third son was under one-year-old and recovering from severe pelvis issues that persisted from that pregnancy) and developed some pretty awesome methods for managing All The Things.
What can I offer you?
It is my mission to share all the self-care tools. For you, fellow busy mama. The one who nurtures everyone else. Whether you are managing stress, overwhelm, fatigue, pain, insomnia or anything else. You deserve self-care. I want to make it easy for you. We know that the prevalence of chronic illness is on the rise, that more people than not suffer from insomnia, stress and anxiety; let’s get a jump on that (having lived my life with these things, I can promise you, you don’t want it).
On this blog, you will get ideas, tips and tricks for how to put down the multiple balls you are juggling. Even for just 10 minutes a day. Learn about Yoga as Self-Care here.
Oh, hey, that’s me! It is so nice to meet you, I am glad you are here. Random facts: I love coffee, am obsessed with Gilmore Girls, am an introvert, read like it’s a fourth job and love, love, love learning. I live in Auckland, New Zealand with my husband, (soon to be) four children and dog.
